The loss of local news has implications for democracy. As Leah Greenberg and Ezra Levin, co-founders of Indivisible, discuss in We Are Indivisible: A Blueprint for Democracy After Trump, local news increases citizen engagement and transparency and reduces polarization.

But all local news is not equal. If you want to support a news outlet in a state that is not indicated on the map below, an excellent directory of local media outlets by state has been compiled by the Media and Democracy Project. The Project writes: These are real outlets, with real journalists. We have curated every entry on this list, so it does not have hedge fund-owned (like Alden Global Capital) or "pink slime" (fake local) news outlets.
